Lectures & Scholarly Interviews

In order to assist his students who were unable to attend his courses during the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020-21, Professor Clark recorded several condensed and casual versions of his lectures in his home office. In addition to these lectures, Clark conducted a series of informal interviews with several prominent scholars in the field of China Christianity studies in 2020. These lectures and interviews are accessible on YouTube channels.

Course Lectures

After classes across the United States were moved to online venues in March, 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Anthony Clark recorded two casual lecture series in his home office to supplement his regular online meetings with his students. The two lecture series, one on East Asian history in general and another on the classical Chinese novel Hongloumeng (Dream of the red Chamber), consist of short introductions to important topics confronted in Clark’s regular classes. Largely unscripted and last-minute, these short lectures include occasional visits from Clark’s cats, Hastings and Mycroft, and several intellectual musings quite off track from the topics intended. Also included on this YouTube channel are videos related to Professor Clark’s early studies of the Chinese martial art, 7-Star Praying Mantis, which he learned from the renowned master, Feng Wenzhong.

Scholarly Interview Series

A recent collaboration between the China Christianity Studies Group (CCSG), an affiliate society of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), and Whitworth University has sponsored and produced a series of interviews conducted by Anthony Clark with several of the world’s most prominent scholars of Christianity in China. This series of twenty-four interviews is entitled, “Christianity in China: Recollections on the Field by Prominent Scholars,” captures the personal and intellectual interests of important scholars in the field, representing areas such as social studies, aesthetic studies, history, theology, and comparative philosophy. Each interview asked such questions as what attracted each scholar to the field, what research discoveries have transformed her or his understanding of the topic, what are her or his hopes for the future of the field, and finally, each scholar was asked to recall a memory of another scholar who has contributed to our understanding of China Christianity Studies.
